Any M1 Carbine Owners...
on GIM? I read the article about "Carbine Williams" in this month's American Rifleman and it kind of piqued my interest in this gun again. I've always wanted one (among many others on my "wish list"), but never could justify the purchase due to the low energy of the ammo, cost of M1 carbines these days and ammo price. Just wondering what M1 carbine owners think of it.

Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
I inherited an M1 carbine - GM manufactured.
Fun to shoot. Hits well for a low energy round and functions well for a WW2 relic. I believe that this holds it's own among the other carbines in the collection. I also have the Springfield Armory M1A in .308. Fun to shoot them along with the Bushy A3 to change things up. If I had to choose between the M1 carbine and the M1A it would definitely be the SA M1A. Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
I love carbine and garands. The carbine and its .30 round have a place in the self defense spectrum. I think its a great round and weapon for women and teenagers. Also it fills the bill for surburban and urban areas where you aren't reaching out past 100 yards and you don't want too much penetration power.
Are there better weapons and rounds out there? yes. But if you have a carbine don't feel like your short shrifted and need to get a $1200 black rifle. |
Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
I like my carbine. I bought it for my wife but enjoy shooting it myself. Modern ammo is weakly loaded and doesn't cycle well unfortunately, so I end up having to scrounge for GI ball which works perfectly.
Also there is a movie about the weapon's inventor titled "Carbine Williams" starring Jimmie Stewart. It's hard to find but a good movie if you can find a copy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044480/ |
Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
I've got one, it's a Rockola. It's a safe queen, she just sits in the back of my safe, right next to an Ithaca 1911 .45, relics of WW2. Still fully able to get the job done if needed again. 1000 rounds of ammo for each one are stored also.

Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
Got one 40+ years ago from the government. Operated OK with GI ammmo. Did not think much of the ballistics. Traded it 30 years ago for a Ruger Mini-14. It is my wifes rifle, I have a couple of SKSs among other pieces.

They're still fairly pricy (~$500), and more of a collector's item than something you could just toss in your car's trunk & not worry if it gets dented/rusty. If interested in a CMP carbine, see: http://www.thecmp.org/m1carbine.htm |
Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
With hollow points its a more than acceptable intermediate range tool.
I do not have one but wouldn't feel terrible if I did. E-A |
Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
Got two....National Postal Meter and the very rare Winchester.
Awesome little rifle....the most handy long guns I own....what a perfect little gun....as said earlier great for kids and gals. About the size and feel of a Rugar 10/22. I reload...so I can churn out a ton of ammo cheap. I found an old reloading company going out of business...I bought their entire supply of brass - I have about 25,000 pieces of once fired 30 Carbine brass. It is really pretty much a pistol cartridge ....about like a light weight 357 magnum round fired from a carbine....it really is no slouch: 950 ft-lbs muzzle energy. Zeroed for 200 yards....has a mid-range trajectory of about 6 inches high. A reasonably good man round in the 100-200 yard range.....it was pretty effective on North Koreans and Chinamen... |
Re: Any M1 Carbine Owners...
Purported to be Audie Murphy's favorite GI issue rifle.
